Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winters are becoming a bit more mild every year in Pennsylvania, but the state is still subjected to the occasional Nor’easter, with the last one hitting quite recently. These snowstorms make the roads incredibly slippery, but that is no excuse when someone causes an accident. Drivers are expected to operate their vehicle in a reasonable manner that keeps everyone safe and when they do not, they can be found negligent and held liable for paying damages. It is for this reason that anyone heading out onto slippery roads in the state follows the important safety tips below.

Maximize Visibility

While you may not want to stand in your driveway wiping off your vehicle, the law requires that you do. Under Pennsylvania Statute, Title 75, Section 4524, all drivers must wipe off their windshield and windows so they can maximize their visibility. It is just as important to wipe off snow and ice from all other parts of the vehicle, as well. Failing to do so could result in the ice and snow flying off the car and hitting another vehicle, which could lead to an accident.

Use Winter Tires

Some drivers think they cannot afford to change their all-season tires every year and drive on winter tires. Other drivers simply forget or procrastinate for too long and end up driving on wintry roads with the wrong type of tires. This is a big mistake, as it could lead to a driver slipping or skidding off the road, or losing control of their vehicle. Always put winter tires on your car every year to avoid an accident and being found negligent.

Slow Down

Posted speed limits are intended to tell drivers how quickly they can drive in optimal conditions. When the roads are covered with ice and snow, all drivers should slow down, usually at least 10 miles below the posted speed limit.

Wear Your Seat Belt

Drivers should always wear their seat belt when they are behind the wheel of a car, and this holds true when the roads are slippery, as well. Seat belts can protect you from serious injury, and potentially even death, so even if you are in a crash while on the road, you will have the necessary protection.

Respect the Road Conditions

Sometimes, driving simply is not worth it. Always check the road conditions before heading out, particularly if it is snowing or has recently snowed. If authorities are recommending that people stay off the road, or you believe the conditions are unsafe, stay home and avoid driving on the roads.
