Empowering Our Community Through Pro Bono Legal Services

October 28, 2024

By van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin

At van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin, our dedication extends beyond advocacy to active service within the Philadelphia community. Through our pro bono practice, led by attorneys Daniel Devlin and Richard Coble, we proudly offer critical legal support to those who need it most. Alongside initiatives like the Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia, where we hold volunteer at free legal clinics across the city, we also partner with Philadelphia VIP to provide pro bono representation to underserved individuals facing legal challenges. These partnerships allow us to bridge the gap for those who might otherwise struggle to find legal help.

The term “pro bono” originates from the Latin phrase pro bono publico, meaning "for the public good." This work is driven by our commitment to justice, allowing us to provide essential legal services voluntarily and without compensation. With every pro bono case, our attorneys help ensure that the law serves everyone, regardless of financial means.

Why Pro Bono Matters to Us

Legal representation should be accessible to all, not just those who can afford it. Through pro bono services, we are directly addressing this gap by offering free legal help on critical matters like housing, family law, and employment rights. Attorneys Devlin and Coble, alongside the rest of our pro bono team, have dedicated their time and expertise to work with both Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia and Philadelphia VIP, assisting clients who otherwise may not have access to legal aid. Through Philadelphia VIP, we can represent individuals one-on-one, helping them navigate complex legal issues with skilled support and compassionate guidance.

Changing Perceptions, Building Trust

Attorneys sometimes face public misconceptions as amoral or even solely profit-driven. At van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin, we challenge this view through our pro bono work. Volunteering with Philadelphia VIP and providing free legal advice through the Christian Legal Clinics, we aim to show that most lawyers are committed professionals who care deeply about justice and their community. By actively working on behalf of the disadvantaged, we hope to build a more positive and accurate perception of the legal profession.

Doing Good, Feeling Good

Our pro bono work is incredibly rewarding. It allows us to see firsthand the impact that accessible legal services can have on someone’s life, helping them protect their rights and secure their futures. By dedicating our time and resources to pro bono work, we serve our community, uphold our professional values, and feel grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. At van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin, we believe that pro bono service is more than an obligation – it’s an opportunity to fulfill our calling and build a stronger, more just Philadelphia.
