van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin attorney Bruce L. As District Attorney in 2002, Castor served as lead prosecutor in the investigation of Mrs. Hufnagle Lauman's death, discovered on November 23, 2002. This decision enabled investigators to redirect their focus, ultimately leading to the arrest of Jeffrey Ivan Vample.

Vample was charged with first-degree murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and related offenses. Of the case’s impact on the community, Castor stated, "This is the kind of case that makes the public blanche because this is a case of a random act of violence involving people who do not know each other particularly well."
