Supporting the Next Generation of Advocates: Mark J. Metzler Judges Two Prestigious Villanova Law Competitions

|

At van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin, our attorneys believe in lifting up the next generation of legal professionals. This November, Associate Mark J. Metzler did exactly that as he volunteered his time and experience at two major advocacy competitions hosted by Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. His commitment reflects not only his passion for legal excellence, but also his dedication to helping law students build the skills they’ll carry into their future careers.

American Bar Association Arbitration Competition — November 8 & 9

Mark began the month by serving as a judge in the American Bar Association Arbitration Competition held at Villanova. The event brought together six law schools, each fielding two teams. Students squared off in arbitration simulations that tested their negotiation skills, ability to argue effectively, and practical understanding of dispute resolution. Working alongside Professor MarySheila McDonald and the institution’s respected Scarpa Negotiation Team, Mark offered observations and feedback rooted in real-world legal experience. His insights gave participants a rare look at how arbitration works in practice, knowledge they can carry forward into their legal careers.

66th Annual Theodore L. Reimel Moot Court Competition — November 10–13

Shortly after the arbitration competition, Mark returned to Villanova for the 66th Annual Theodore L. Reimel Moot Court Competition, a long-standing intra-school tradition that challenges students with simulated appellate-court proceedings. The competition began with preliminary rounds before progressing to semifinal and final rounds. Judges like Mark played a critical role in evaluating written briefs and oral arguments and in helping students sharpen their legal writing, advocacy skills, and appellate strategy.

By volunteering for these competitions, Mark reinforced his commitment to mentorship and practical legal education. He knows that these student competitions do more than build skills; they help aspiring attorneys gain confidence, poise, and a sense of what effective advocacy looks like under pressure.

A Commitment to Mentorship and Legal Education

Mark’s involvement in these events reflects his broader commitment to legal education and professional mentorship. He understands the importance of advocacy training and appreciates the effort students put into preparing for these competitions. By serving as a judge, he provided students with the encouragement, insight, and constructive critique they need to grow into confident, capable attorneys.

At van der Veen, Hartshorn & Levin, we are proud to see our attorneys actively supporting the legal community and investing in future advocates. Mark’s passion for helping law students is a testament to the values that guide our firm both inside and outside the courtroom.
