DUIs During SummerHow to Celebrate Safely & Avoid DUIs

July 25, 2022

Drunk drivers are more likely to be on the roads with increased backyard barbecues, cookouts, fireworks, and holiday celebrations. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), July is reported as the deadliest month for DUIs (mainly because of Independence Day). In 2017, 237 people were killed in drunk driving-related crashes on the Fourth of July. These deaths accounted for 39 percent of traffic deaths during that holiday season.

How to Celebrate Safely & Avoid DUIs

Enjoying a safe Fourth of July holiday does not have to be boring or alcohol-free. When preparing to celebrate with your friends, remember these drinking and driving safety tips to avoid getting a DUI charge:

  • If you plan to host any July gatherings, have non-alcoholic beverage options for the designated drivers.
  • If you plan to drink and don't have a friend or family member as a designated driver, take advantage of rideshare services like Uber or Lyft
  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • If you are with someone who is about to drive after drinking, take their keys and make the arrangements for a safe ride home.
  • Even if you feel "buzzed," have someone who hasn't been drinking at all take you home. During the Fourth of July weekend, there is typically an increase in DUI checkpoints and routine stops.
  • If you notice a drunk driver on the road, pull over safely and call 911.
  • Stay the night at a friend or family member's house if you cannot drive home safely. Leaving in the morning is a much better option.
  • Don't "sleep it off" in your car. Even if you are not actively driving, sitting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while intoxicated can still result in a DUI charge.
