Winter Driving Safety Tips

January 12, 2023

By van der Veen, Hartshorn, Levin & Lindheim

As a Pennsylvania Driver, you and your car must be both adequately prepared for winter driving conditions. Adverse weather is expected during the winter and can pose a greater risk of road auto accidents. Although driving during this time of the year can require much more caution, it can be done easily with these few steps:

Prepare Your Car

Even with frequent yearly maintenance, your car should still be properly prepared for possible winter weather conditions. This may include:

  • Checking your tire pressure
  • Changing to winter tires when temperatures drop below 45 degrees
  • Testing your battery
  • Checking windshield wiper blades and changing them if in need of a replacement
  • Keeping the gas tank at least half full to help prevent a gas line freeze
  • Making sure to check the cooling system and making sure your heat works

Prepare Yourself

There are also things you can do before leaving your home to be best prepared for winter driving. These may include:

  • Setting a few extra minutes aside to warm your car up before beginning to drive
  • If there are signs of any oncoming storm, trying to remain inside until it has passed
  • Cleaning external cameras, side view mirrors, and sensors of any dirt, ice, or snow so each can be used in optimal condition.
  • Never running your vehicle inside a closed garage - this could cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has also prepared a Winter Driving Guide to help drivers ensure optimal safety when driving in the winter.
