Types Of Car Accidents In Pennsylvania

January 27, 2022

By van der Veen, Hartshorn, Levin & Lindheim

Any act of negligence can result in any type of car accident. Some, though, are more serious than others. One man was recently taken to hospital after a roll-over accident that involved his vehicle, two others, and a parked tractor-trailer truck. Shockingly, the man walked away with only minor injuries, but that is not always the case. Roll-over crashes are just one type of accident that is common on Pennsylvania’s roads, but there are others, as well. Below are some of the most common types of accidents in Pennsylvania.

Single Vehicle Accidents

These crashes occur when one vehicle strikes anything other than another vehicle. A car may strike an animal, debris on the road, a median, or anything else that causes them to run off the road.

Head-On Accidents

When two vehicles are involved in a collision in which the front ends of both vehicles strike each other, the results can be catastrophic. Many times, these crashes are even fatal. A single-vehicle head-on collision can be just as catastrophic as one that involves multiple cars.

Side Impact

Also called T-bone crashes, these accidents are most serious when they occur at intersections, which is common. Intersection T-bone accidents are even worse due to the fact that many drivers are traveling at high speeds. However, these types of accidents are also not uncommon in parking lots, when the injuries from the low impact are likely to not be as severe.

Rear-End Accidents

Rear-end crashes typically happen because one vehicle follows another too closely, behavior that is known as tailgating. The seriousness of injuries sustained in rear-end crashes is dependent on the speed at the time of impact. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, nearly 30 percent of car accidents are rear-end accidents.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents can involve just one vehicle, or they can involve multiple vehicles. In either case, rollover accidents are extremely dangerous. During this type of crash, a vehicle will flip over onto its side or roof while in motion. Large trucks and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are especially prone to rollover crashes.

Sideswipe Accidents

When the side of one vehicle strikes the side of another, it is known as a sideswipe crash. Most often, these accidents are caused by a driver that makes an improper lane change, failing to check their blind spots and the sides of the vehicle when they do.
