Things To Know If You Get Into An RV Accident This Summer

May 20, 2021

By van der Veen, Hartshorn, Levin & Lindheim

A multi-vehicle crash involving a recreational vehicle (RV) recently shut down Interstate 81 North in Cumberland county and unfortunately, it will not be the last of the season. Even as restrictions ease in Pennsylvania and things start to reopen, many will turn to RVing this summer, as it is a fairly safe way to travel. Pennsylvania has strict requirements for RV operators but these are not always followed. When they are not, accidents happen. If you or someone you love is hurt in an RV accident this year, there are important things you should know.

Why are RVs More Dangerous than Standard Vehicles?

RVs are much larger than standard vehicles, and they are much heavier, too. These are just some of the reasons RVs pose such risks when they are involved in an accident. RV accidents typically result in very serious injuries, and even death, for the following reasons:

  • The fuel and propane tanks on RVs are not always properly protected.
  • RVs are unstable, which can lead to tire blowouts and de-treading accidents.
  • RV passengers may not wear seatbelts all the time.
  • Distracted driving is especially dangerous when the RV operator is tired.
  • RVs have a higher center of gravity, so they are more likely to roll over.
  • The large size of RVs makes it difficult for operators to check blind spots, navigate narrow roads, and negotiate turns.
  • Structural defects are often not noticed because of the RVs large size.

Due to the fact that RVs are so much more dangerous than standard vehicles, drivers must meet certain requirements before operating an RV.

Requirements for RV Drivers

Unlike many other states, in Pennsylvania individuals that wish to operate an RV must obtain a special driver’s license. RVs are intended for long distance driving and often, the people going on the trip often share driving duties. It is important to note that anyone that wants to operate an RV at any time needs to obtain the driver’s license that allows them to do so, even if they are not the primary operator.

It is not surprising that many people pay no attention to these requirements when they want to head out on a road trip. Additionally, RV passengers may move about the vehicle when it is on the road, and fail to wear their seatbelts at all times. All of these actions can result in a crash. Regardless of whether RV operators violated the laws of the state, or were simply negligent on the road and it results in an accident, you can hold them liable for paying damages.
